SSC pupils to be tested for aptitude
The state plans to conduct an interest inventory test for students appearing for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination, to help them make career choices, from the current academic year.“Interest inventory testing will now be conducted for SSC students. Instructed officials to chalk outline for this,” school education minister Vinod Tawde tweeted.

“Interest inventory test will help students gauge their inclination, effective vocational guidance and in making better career choices,” he said.

Officials said the test will be conducted online in December, at the district level.

The test will evaluate students’ interests and aptitude to help them decide on careers. Principals have welcomed the move.

“There is definitely a need to identify the skills and interests of students, which may be beyond regular academics. If this test helps them do that, there will be a lot of students who will know options which they can excel in even if they do not score very high marks in the board exams,” said Prashant Redij, principal, Hilda Castelino High School, Kandivli.

However, some principals are sceptical about the plan’s implementation. “The plan is great and there is a need to conduct such tests, especially for disadvantaged students who do not have the means to get it done on their own. But such last-minute planning may not ensure proper implementation, just like the competency tests,” said another principal.

This year, the state started conducting competency tests for classes II to VIII. The tests are meant to measure the student learning levels in first language and mathematics. However, these were marred by delays and shortage of question papers. The next round of competency tests is expected to be conducted later this month.
